Obama promises India's access to Headley

Washington: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh focused extensively on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in his 50-minute talks with US President Barack Obama on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit on Sunday at Blair House, the presidential guest house across the road from the White House.

The Prime Minister brought to Obama's attention the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks masterminds who were freely roaming in Pakistan. Singh sought access to their accomplice David Coleman Headley, who is currently is currently in the US custody.

Obama has assured Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that he is "fully supportive" of India's request for access to Headely. He also said legal issues had to be addressed - suggesting that uncertainty remains over when and in what form Indian investigators would question Headley.

“President Obama is sensitive to India's need to question David Coleman Headley. They are working through their legal system,” said India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao.

Obama also agreed that Pakistan must act against the 26/11 perpetrators, specifically referring to the activities of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hafiz Saeed and Illyas Kashmiri.

Moreover, he said the US had put the Lashkar-e-Taiba under the scanner and also acknowledged India's concerns about Pakistan misusing military aid.

Obama also raised concerns about Nuclear Terrorism - saying that terror groups like the al-Qaeda will not think twice about using WMDs.

Obama also supported India's presence in Afghanistan -- while thanking Indians for their sacrifice in that country.
