That saying men can’t live without women is stating the obvious. But it’s always nice once in a while to be serenaded and have your name shouted from the rooftops. And if our names weren’t shouted out loud, we took solace in shutting out eyes and imagining our names to be Suzanna, Carol, Chandni or Kiran.
Not lagging behind in matters of love was Hindi cinema. Growing up, these film songs were our daily staples.
Suzanna is what Hrithik sang to woo his wife. The song was originally sung by a Dutch band called ‘The Art Company’. It was an instant hit when it released in the 1980s. Almost two decades later, the song still rocks on.
When Rishi Kapoor sang Chandni, o meri Chandni, most of our us wanted our names to be Chandni. If we can’t look like Sridevi or have a Rishi Kapoor woo us, the least we can close our eyes and pretend like the song is sung just for us.
Aicha was sung in French by Algerian singer Cheb Khaled. But the language barrier didn’t stop the non-French-speaking world from singing along. Sing we did, even if we didn’t understand a word of what we were crooning.
Humko Mary nahin Mangta
Humko Lily nahin Mangta
Humko Sandra from Bandra nahin Mangta
Toh kaun Mangta?
Julie Julie, Johnny a dil tum pe aaya Julie
The first time I heard this song was on a TV show Mithun was a part of. He danced to it at the request of Vivek Oberoi. I can’t help but gush, that even at this age, you watch him perform and fall instantly in love with him. I wonder how I missed this song while growing up. Mithun’s brilliant dancing makes you want to watch the song again and again.
Oh! Carol, I am but a fool,
Darling I love you tho’ you treat me cruel,
You hurt me and you made me cry
But if you leave me I will surely die
Oh Carol has to be one of the most sung songs by lovers to their girlfriends or wives. Way back in 1959, Neil Sedaka knew what exactly to say, rather sing, to show his love to his then girlfriend, singer/songwriter Carole King. Can any woman resist a man after he professes such undying love?
This song doesn’t really need an introduction. “I love you, Kkkkkiran” should be enough to tell which film I’m talking about. A crazy Shah Rukh sings his love for Juhi in this movie. Some of did wish it was us SRK was singing to.
When these songs released, they became such sensations that parents named their daughters after them. And the rest of us wished our names were sung too.
